Legendary songwriter Billy Steinberg, best known for penning iconic hits such as “True Colors” and “Like a Virgin,” passed away on February 16 at the age of 69.

With a career spanning over four decades, Steinberg has left an undeniable mark on the music industry. Along with his songwriting partner Tom Kelly, he was responsible for some of the most memorable and chart-topping songs in pop music history.

Born in Fresno, California in 1950, Steinberg showed a natural talent for music from a young age. He began playing the piano at just four years old and by his teenage years, he was already writing his own songs. After attending college at California State University, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music.

Steinberg’s big break came in 1984 when he and Kelly co-wrote the hit song “True Colors” for Cyndi Lauper. The emotional ballad went on to top the charts and became an instant classic. It not only showcased Steinberg’s exceptional songwriting abilities but also his knack for tapping into the human experience and emotions.

The success of “True Colors” opened the doors for Steinberg and Kelly to work with some of the biggest names in the industry. In 1985, they wrote Madonna’s iconic hit “Like a Virgin,” which solidified their status as hitmakers. The song became Madonna’s first number one single and remains one of her most recognizable and beloved songs to this day.

Throughout their partnership, Steinberg and Kelly continued to churn out hit after hit, including “Eternal Flame” by The Bangles, “I Drove All Night” by Cyndi Lauper, and “So Emotional” by Whitney Houston. Their songs have been recorded by legendary artists such as Michael Jackson, Celine Dion, and Tina Turner.

Steinberg’s talent and contribution to the music industry did not go unnoticed. He received multiple Grammy nominations and won the ASCAP Pop Music Award for Songwriter of the Year in 1990. He was also inducted into the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2011.

Beyond his commercial success, Steinberg was known for his genuine and humble personality. He was loved and respected by his peers for his musical brilliance and kind nature. Many artists, including Madonna and Cyndi Lauper, have shared their heartfelt tributes to Steinberg, honoring his legacy and the impact he had on their careers.

While the news of Steinberg’s passing is undoubtedly heartbreaking for the music community, his songs will continue to live on and inspire generations of artists to come. His ability to capture the essence of human emotions through his music is a testament to his talent and will forever be cherished by his fans.

The passing of Billy Steinberg is a great loss to the music world, but his songs will continue to be a source of comfort, joy, and inspiration for years to come. He leaves behind a legacy that will not be forgotten, and his contributions to the industry will be celebrated for generations. Rest in peace, Billy Steinberg. Your music will forever be our true colors.
