From Bob Weir to John Forté and beyond, 2021 has been a year of great loss for the music industry. We have said goodbye to many talented artists who have left an indelible mark on the world of music. As we remember them, we also celebrate their contributions and the legacies they have left behind.

Bob Weir, the founding member of the iconic band Grateful Dead, passed away in August at the age of 75. He was a masterful guitarist and a prolific songwriter, known for his unique blend of rock, folk, and blues. Weir’s music influenced generations and his impact on the jam band scene is immeasurable. His passing was a great loss not only for the music community, but for the world.

Another legend we lost this year was John Forté, a talented rapper and producer. Forté rose to fame as a member of the hip-hop group The Fugees and went on to have a successful solo career. He was a versatile artist, blending his love for hip-hop, jazz, and classical music to create a unique sound. Forté was also a philanthropist, using his music to raise awareness and funds for various causes. His untimely death at the age of 45 was a shock to many, and his music will continue to inspire and touch people’s lives.

We also mourned the passing of Dusty Hill, the bassist for the iconic rock band ZZ Top. Hill’s deep bass lines and soulful vocals were a signature part of the band’s sound. He was a beloved member of the music community, known for his down-to-earth personality and dedication to his craft. ZZ Top’s music will forever be a staple in rock history, and Hill’s contributions will never be forgotten.

The music world also bid farewell to a rising star this year, as rapper and producer MF DOOM passed away at the age of 49. Known for his intricate rhymes and unique flow, DOOM was a highly influential figure in the underground hip-hop scene. His music was a blend of social commentary, humor, and storytelling, earning him a loyal fanbase. Despite his passing, MF DOOM’s influence on hip-hop will continue to live on.

2021 also saw the loss of a true country music legend, Charley Pride. Pride was the first Black member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and the first Black performer to headline at the Grand Ole Opry. His smooth baritone voice and heartfelt lyrics touched the lives of many, breaking barriers and inspiring generations of country musicians. Pride’s legacy will continue to pave the way for diversity and inclusivity in the country music industry.

One of the most influential figures in rock and roll, Eddie Van Halen, left us in October at the age of 65. As the lead guitarist of the band Van Halen, he revolutionized rock music with his innovative playing style. His technical prowess and showmanship on stage made him a guitar hero to millions. Van Halen’s impact on the world of rock and his guitar skills will continue to inspire future generations of musicians.

The music community also lost a rising star in Nanci Griffith, a singer-songwriter known for her folk and country music. Griffith’s songs were a blend of storytelling and social commentary, earning her critical acclaim and a devoted fanbase. She was a pioneer for women in the music industry and her influence will continue to shine through her music.

Other notable artists we said goodbye to this year include Jim Steinman, the songwriter behind hits like “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Bat Out of Hell,” and Don Everly, one half of the iconic duo The Everly Brothers. Both artists left an indelible mark on the music industry and their songs will continue to be cherished by fans for years to come.

As we remember these incredible artists, let us also celebrate their legacies and the impact they have had on our lives. They may no longer be with us, but their music will continue to live on, inspiring and bringing joy to people around the world. Their contributions have made the music industry richer and their absence will be deeply felt.

We may have lost many great artists this year, but their music and memories will forever be etched in our hearts. Let us honor their legacies by listening to their music, sharing their stories, and keeping their spirit alive. Rest in peace, Bob Weir, John Forté, Dusty Hill
