As we celebrate Independence Day on July 4th, 2025, it is a time for us to reflect on the progress we have made as a nation while also acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead. In this spirit, the East Bay Times reader letters to the editor for July 4th, 2025, shed light on some important issues that need our attention.

One of the letters caught my eye, titled ‘Alligator Alcatraz’. It brought attention to the increasing number of alligator sightings in the San Francisco Bay, particularly around Alcatraz Island. While these prehistoric creatures may seem fascinating to some, they pose a danger to both humans and the delicate ecosystem of the Bay. The letter urged authorities to take immediate action before a tragedy occurs. I believe it is crucial for us to address this issue before it escalates any further. The safety of our citizens and the preservation of our environment should always be a top priority.

Another letter, titled ‘Trump’s indifference’, highlighted the lack of action from former President Trump in addressing climate change. The writer reminded us that climate change is not a political issue but a global crisis that requires urgent action. It is disheartening to see our leaders turn a blind eye to such a pressing issue. However, as citizens, we must continue to raise our voices and demand action from our elected officials. We have a responsibility to protect our planet for future generations.

The third letter, titled ‘Path down’, addressed the issue of homelessness in the East Bay. The writer shared their experience of witnessing a person sleeping on the sidewalk and feeling helpless in knowing how to help. This is a reality for many of our citizens, and it is a problem that needs to be addressed with compassion and urgency. It is time for us to come together as a community and find solutions to this growing issue. We cannot turn a blind eye to our fellow citizens in need.

The fourth letter, titled ‘Preventable deaths’, highlighted the rising number of preventable deaths due to lack of access to healthcare. It is a sobering reminder that while we have made significant progress in the medical field, not everyone has equal access to healthcare. It is unacceptable that in a country as wealthy as ours, people are dying because they cannot afford medical treatment. It is time for us to prioritize the health and well-being of all our citizens, regardless of their socioeconomic status.

Lastly, the letter titled ‘Shine is off’ shed light on the current state of our economy. The writer expressed concern over the rising cost of living and the diminishing job opportunities in the East Bay. As we celebrate our independence, it is important for us to remember that economic stability is vital for the well-being of our citizens. We must work towards creating a more equitable society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and succeed.

In conclusion, while the letters to the editor highlighted some pressing issues in our society, they also serve as a reminder of the power of our voices. We must continue to speak up and demand change from our leaders. As we celebrate our independence, let us also remember our responsibility towards each other and our planet. Let us work together towards a better, more inclusive future for all. Happy 4th of July, 2025!
